Fwd: C-130 "Angel Flight"

For the info of those who may not know, the 'angel wings' that appear in several of the pics used in this video are not 'PhotoShopped' in -- they are naturally-occurring smoke trails churned up by the turbulence over the wings and horizontal stabilizer and are from the flares that are deployed to confuse enemy target-seeking missiles.

Now, I defy you to watch this video without either chills or tears -- or, both!!  Be sure to read the comments below the video (after) you return from 'full screen.'

God, watch over all our vets
and their families -- those still with us and those who have gone on.

This video is about a song called "Angel Flight". . . .   It is terrific. The song
is being performed with "effects." Listen to the words of the pilot and the
tower, and make sure you sit quietly and listen at the very end.. You will
understand why one of the singers said he would be glad to help with the
song.....if he could stop crying. This is beautiful. God bless Vets!

Clever 1-Minute Video Shows How Airplane Wings Really Work

Finally someone has shown what I have argued to be the case for 30 plus years. If it worked the way most
books say it does then you could not mix paint and there would be no need to stir anything.

FAA Safety Briefing News Update

Aircraft Registration Deadline
In July 2010, the FAA published a final rule that establishes specific registration expiration dates over a three-year period for all U.S. civil aircraft registered before October 1, 2010, and requires re-registration of those aircraft according to a specific schedule. Currently, aircraft registered in July of any year will have their registration expire on March 31, 2012 and must apply for re-registration no later than January 31, 2012. Owners of aircraft with a July registration should have already received an expiration notice that contains an online re-registration code.
To ensure the FAA has the correct address information for your aircraft, you can check your N-number here: http://registry.faa.gov/aircraftinquiry/nnum_inquiry.aspx.
An FAQ and complete schedule of expiration dates can be found here: www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/aircraft_certification/aircraft_registry/reregistration_faq/

2012 Kicks Off with Aviation Events in Great Lakes Region
Looking for a way to make good on your 2012 resolution to improve your piloting or mechanic skills? Then you may want to check out the 12th Annual Great Lakes Aviation Conference January 20 and 21, 2012, at the Student Center of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI.  The event, billed as the most complete aviation conference in the Midwest, will host nearly 100 aviation exhibitors and offer educational opportunities for both pilots and AMTs of all experience levels. This year, the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association (PAMA) will hold its annual Aviation Maintenance Symposium in conjunction with this Aviation Conference on January 19 and 20. FAA Safety Team representatives will be on hand at both events so be sure to pay them a visit.

Flying is Not a Spectator Sport
Having the right kind of flight training experience can make a big difference in how efficient and effective you are as a pilot. In her article "Flying is Not a Spectator Sport," author Susan Parson explains the importance of being an active participant during your flight training and offers tips on how to stay engaged during the learning process. One of those pointers Parson highlights is a debriefing technique known as collaborative critique. This method uses a four-step process to replay, reconstruct, reflect, and redirect the flight experience. Parson also stresses the real world experience gained from scenario-based training and its ability to sharpen a student's decision-making skills during an unexpected event.
To read the article, see page 8 of the January/February issue of FAA Safety Briefing at http://www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing/.

Fwd: FW: Obama does it again - US AIR FORCE CONTRACT

Subject: Fwd: Obama does it again - US AIR FORCE CONTRACT

Just when you think you've heard it all......this is how to make your blood boil!

"Any president whose actions so consistently refute his own words must have deep contempt for the intelligence of the American public."

The obama administration told U.S. owned Hawker Beechcraft earlier this week they are being excluded from bidding on the US Air Force contract for a light attack aircraft. That leaves Brazilian owned Embraer as the likely recipient of the lucrative deal. I found this one hard to believe so I did a little research. It was tough because this was completely ignored by the main stream media. The information is out there on several conservative sites. Please see the two articles linked below.

This is a double slap in the face of the United States. At a time when jobs, the economy, and security are the most critical priorities for our country, the Obama administration decides to send a defense contract to a foreign owned company.

This has to be the stupidest thing this administration has done to date. This is not just a dumb decision, it is a perfect example of why this president is such a poor leader. He talks about wanting jobs. He says we need to force companies to repatriate billions of dollars that Americans keep overseas. He wants to raise taxes so he can spend billions on stimulus that does nothing to stimulate anything.

And when itÕs time to act, he sends our tax dollars overseas at the expense of American jobs and income for an American company. This is nothing more than a Chicago-style political pay back; but this time it is at the expense of our national security.

How much more damage will obama be allowed to do in the next 14 months? One of the lead stories in the media this week blasted congress for insider trading. If this contract goes to Embraer it will be a huge pay off to another George Soros company.

When will the 4th estate do itÕs constitutionally protected job and expose the real obama to the American people?

We can no longer depend on the media to pass on any news that might be construed as negative towards the democrats.

Please pass these articles to your friends to insure they get the information lacking from so much of todayÕs liberal press.

Fwd: "Special Safety Tip" - FAASafety.gov

FAA Safety Team | Safer Skies Through Education

Special Safety Tip
Notice Number: NOTC3434

Here we have an excellent example of an accident that did not happen!

While an alert IA (or mechanic) discovered the discrepancy, it appears multiple mechanics and IAs missed "seeing" the incorrect installation. Initially, someone made the incorrect installation, and an Inspector missed it! This example can serve as a reminder that mechanics and Inspectors need to be diligent in performing their work.

As pilots and owners, we need to encourage mechanics not to shortcut any inspections! Our very lives may depend upon it!

You can review this December Maintenance Alert here: https://www.faasafety.gov/files/notices/2012/Jan/2011_12_Alert_BonanzaCableCutterbrief.pdf

You can see pictures here: https://www.faasafety.gov/files/notices/2012/Jan/V35A_Pictures.pdf

While the Editor's comment in the GA Alert seems to praise the IA who discovered this one, the photos clearly demonstrate a failure to have the cable installed properly in the first place. It is possible there were many repeated inspections on this V35A over a number of years without anyone noticing the slow sawing action through the primary control tube. (Investigation revealed this particular airplane did not fly very often.)

We need to ask ourselves what we are relying on as the basis for the GA Quality Assurance program, as it relates to qualifications, training, recurrency, following directions, and performing proper inspections.
This is a systemic challenge for maintenance facilities and individual mechanics alike.

If you are aware of other examples we can share, please forward the details to Airmen@FAASafety.gov; we would be especially interested in any photographs you may have.
